The Shells of Somme by Sheldon Koch

Hope is hardest to kill

He who has hope is forever buried under its promise of spring

The man tasked with killing his child must know that hope can’t exist for progress

Hope

Wishes

are where kids die

Stuck in mud of their own making

Letting themselves be devoured

Slowly sinking

The soul cannot live as long as hope does because hope is the opposite to the happiness which it desires
