When I wake up today
I expect to wake up with gloom
But the slush outside wastes away

Absence
years without seeing your face
yet you still seem to occupy space

yet where is this woman?
she hasn’t seen how I’ve grown
For it’s our grief that gives us our gratitude
Even in these trying times
We still endure the dreadful climb
Up a mountain, up so high
And as we climb we call out for some sort of reply
Isolated on your mountain, all alone, no one to confide in

my almost-uncle, my close-enough-to-aunt,
and my might-as-well-be-cousins.
