Neglected Time by Cate Schultz

We need to know everything

A sense of immediacy

A sense of distress

From what?

When has this been a race?

Did I miss the start?

Or are they all truly behind

Maybe I’m in the wrong lane

Or maybe I have always been in the right one

The one that doesn’t speed

That appreciates the way the sun sparkles on the leaves

The way a mother bends down to hug her little one

The one that notices the grace

Opposed to the minutes rushing by

But I missed the exit

I was supposed to follow you

I don’t have a GPS

Because

What’s the point of watching the seasons

When you can only see them

From above

Does the snow look as beautiful from up there?

Do you still believe life tries to be fair?

I yearn for your presence

Your answers to my questions

Your words about the leaves changing

Now when I see them

All I see is brown.
