An unfortunate recognition

An unfortunate recognition by Charlie Van De Moortel

Bird on the sidewalk

On the way to school

Black, white, and grey

I pray

For safety

And warmth

Short breaths

Small body

Do you need help?

Approach

It does not move

2

1 foot away

Frozen in place.

Not an act of trust

But terror

I know you

I was you

Bird on the sidewalk

Begging

Pleading

Not to give into touch

But not having a choice

A soul giving up

A body that fails,

You could feel it in your bones.

Pulling you down.

Give in,

Give in,

Give in,

Eat the food and ask for more

Pray for forgiveness

Do your chores

Frozen in place.

Not an act of trust,

But terror.
